Window Film Installation for Minnesota Homeowners
Choosing the right installer matters as much as choosing the film. Here’s what to check before you hire anyone, including us. Sun Control has installed window film in Minnesota homes since 1978.
1. Check licensing and insurance
Minnesota’s Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) recommends checking a contractor’s license status and history before you sign. Look the company up on DLI’s license search, and ask for a current certificate of liability insurance and proof of workers’ compensation.
Sun Control: Minnesota State License #IR702639, fully insured, with our own employed installers.
2. Ask which film, and why
A good installer names the exact film (brand and product line) and shows you its technical data sheet: how much heat, glare and UV it blocks, and how much light it lets through. Be wary of anyone who just says “premium tint.”
Sun Control: we show you the data sheet for every film we recommend. Our residential films reject up to 80% of solar heat and block up to 99% of UV.
3. Make sure the film suits your glass
Most Minnesota homes have double-pane or low-E windows. Not every film is approved for every type of glass, and the wrong one can void the window maker’s warranty. The installer should identify your glass before recommending a film.
4. Look for manufacturer certification
Film makers train and certify dealers. Choosing a certified dealer keeps the manufacturer’s warranty valid.
5. Get the warranty in writing
Ask what the warranty covers (peeling, bubbling, fading, glass breakage) and who stands behind it: the installer, the manufacturer, or both.
Sun Control: warranty coverage depends on the film and the installation, so we put the exact terms for your job in writing with your quote.
6. Choose someone who knows Minnesota weather
Minnesota windows face summer heat and glare and long, cold winters. Ask whether the installer offers low-E films that also keep heat in during winter, not just films that block summer sun.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licensed contractor to install window film in Minnesota?
It depends on the job and how it’s contracted. Either way, Minnesota DLI recommends checking any contractor’s license status and complaint history before you sign, and asking for proof of insurance.
Will window film void my window warranty?
It can, if the film isn’t approved for your glass. A qualified installer checks your glass type first and uses a film the manufacturer approves for it.
Does window film help in winter?
Yes, with the right film. Low-E window films reflect heat back into the room in winter, as well as blocking solar heat in summer.
How much UV does window film block?
Quality residential films block up to 99% of UV rays, the main cause of fading in floors, furniture and art.
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Sun Control estimates are free, in person or virtual.
Is Sun Control an authorized window film dealer?
Yes. Sun Control of Minnesota is an authorized 3M and XPEL window film dealer, so the film we install is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
Does Sun Control check my glass before quoting?
Yes. We identify your glass type, number of panes and any low-E coating, and confirm the film is approved for that glass before we give you a price.
What warranty does Sun Control give on home window film?
A written warranty that covers both the film and our labor. Terms depend on the film and your windows, and you get them in writing with your quote.
Where are Sun Control’s locations?
Sun Control has five locations: St. Paul (headquarters), Plymouth, Rochester, Duluth and Hudson, Wisconsin. We have installed window film in the region since 1978.
