Is Night Time Privacy With Window Film Possible?

Is Night Time Privacy With Window Film Possible?

What a great question random person from the internet! We may have your answer, although you may not like it.

At Sun Control Of Minnesota, we sell window tint that offers privacy by creating a mirror-like finish on the exterior side of the film (facing the street). This unfortunately only works during the day, or during very specific conditions at night.

What Film Provides Day Time Privacy for My Home?

There’s plenty of window film that can do it, but at Sun Control of Minnesota, we only trust a few: Solar Gard Slate, 3M Nightvision, and Llumar DR.

Solar Gard Slate:

Slate 20 Film for Solar Control and Daytime Privacy | Panorama

This film offers a sleek, modern look with excellent heat rejection and daytime privacy. Its neutral tone complements any home's exterior.

3M Nightvision:

A popular choice, 3M Nightvision provides superior daytime privacy while maintaining a clear view from the inside. It also reduces glare and rejects harmful UV rays.

Llumar DR:

Llumar DR offers a darker shade for enhanced privacy and a reflective appearance. It's a great option for homeowners looking for maximum heat rejection and daytime privacy.

How Do The Films Work?

These films work by reflecting light.  The mirrored finish is created by a thin metallic layer embedded in the film. This layer reflects sunlight, making the glass appear mirrored from the outside.

So Why Can’t Any of these films give me privacy during the night?

The way these films work, the mirror-like finish is only effective if the outside of the home is brighter than the inside. For example, if you live in a ranch-style home without a streetlight outside, it’s almost like the film isn’t there; people will be able to see straight through.

Even a streetlight won't always help. If your home lights are on, they overpower the streetlight, and you lose the privacy effect. This is why it primarily only works during the day.

If I want to achieve Night Time Privacy, what are some steps you recommend?

It depends on the aesthetic you want.  Typical window film won’t offer nighttime privacy. The only film that can is frosted film, but it also blocks your view from the inside. We have various designs and can even create custom designs. This is a popular option for front doors and bathroom windows.

Another option is installing shades or blinds. We offer Sheerweave Interior Solar Shades that complement window film. They roll down easily and can be hidden away when not needed.
